So yes, there is a double meaning to the phrase ‘flow’ in sport.
Flow in sporting terms detonates a state of optimum performance. Where the individual is fully engaged and in the zone of training. So why then shouldn’t we apply the same ‘flow state’ to our monthly menses if possible? How can we embrace our flow, so that we can find a more synergistic way to create harmonies with our mind and bodies during this important time of the month?
The latest research from University College London (UCL) has conducted some interesting research around women’s cognitive skills whilst conducting their sports whilst menstruating. Dr Flamina Ronca, first author of the study from UCL Dividion of Surgery and Interventional Science said :
“What is surprising is that the participants performance was better when they were on their period, which challenges what women, and perhaps society more generally, assume about their abilities at this time of the month’
Participants reacted quicker and made fewer errors during menstruation, despite believing their perfromance would be worse.
